MAKING & MATH | 2PM SATURDAYS | JAN 14-MARCH 11 | AGES 12-16

Jeff Mather, a community-based public artist and environmental sculptor, and Marquetta Johsnon, a quilter and textile artist, will teach participants to apply algebra, geometry and textiles to engineering a sculpture. It will be permanently installed at the ArtsXchange during the Joy of Learning Festival on May 6!

ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTISTS:

Marquetta Johnson is a Textile Artist and Quilter currently residing in Stone Mountain, Georgia. She is a creator and maker of Textiles, Wall Hangings, Quilts and Collectibles made from her own Hand Dyed, Tie Dyed, Printed and Stamped fabrics. She has over 30 years of teaching artist experience and professional development in the areas of Arts Integration, Arts Infusion, and inclusive classrooms for all ages and all abilities.

Marquetta has appeared on many radio and television shows discussing and demonstrating her art form, an example being HGTV’s “Crafters Coast to Coast.” Marquetta’s artwork has been featured in several magazines including “Quilt Magazine” and MARTA’s “Marta on the Go Magazine.” Her artwork is in many private and corporate collections such as the estate of the late B.B King, Faith Ringgold, the University of Maryland, Turner Broadcasting, and The Coca Cola Company. Marquetta is also a published author having written the book “Hand Dyed Quilts” now being sold on Amazon.com. Marquetta has affiliations with VSA arts International/Kennedy Center, The Names Project-The AIDS Memorial Quilt Foundation, the Decatur Education Foundation, Utah State University’s Arts Access Program and the High Museum of Art, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Marquetta has a textile studio practice and presently offers STEM/STEAM inspired art experiences virtually K-12. She also encourages “young artists” to embrace quilting by writing a blog for the Modern Quilt Guild’s Member’s Newsletter demonstrating and discussing how the Art of Quilting intersects with Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.

Jeff Mather is a community-based public artist and environmental sculptor and interdisciplinary artist based in Atlanta. A member of Alternate ROOTS, the southern regional community-based art for social justice organization, since 1992, he has had several of his community-based public art projects, including theater projects, partially funded by ROOTS' Community/Artist Partnership Program.

In addition to his many sculpture residencies, Mather was the lead artist for the Woodruff Art Center's Digital Storytelling Program and has run residencies in digital media, including video projection mapping. Mather has been an artist-in-residence twice at the High Museum in Atlanta, and was the first visual artist-in-residence for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, developing an object theater + dance collaboration for a series of 20 ASO concerts. He also directed several experimental object theater production at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta.

Jeff contributed sculptural elements to Southern Theater Conspiracy and Theatre Gael productions. He created a series of design focussed workshops for the Georgia Thespian Conference in Columbus that flipped the traditional arrangement of theater tech designers responding to a script, allowing designers to “go first” and then explore the drama or comedy inherent in what they had designed.
